Over the past few weeks the PSNI has engaged in a campaign of harassment against pro-choice activists and the general public for allegedly obtaining the abortion pills from Women Help Women/Women on Web websites. This is a continuation of previous criminalisation attempts by the courts in order to inflict fear amongst people who have to resort to the abortion pills as their only available means to have control over their reproductive choices and life.
While the archaic laws in Ireland criminalise women or sends them to England, abortion pills from womenonweb.org and womenhelp.org serve as a lifeline for women accessing abortion across Ireland. The pills are on the World Health Organisation's Essential Medicines list and are used all across the world for safe, early medical abortions. While abortion remains illegal and the trip to England expensive, the very safe abortion pills, mifepristone and misoprostol, are a rescue from a nightmare for many people who find themselves in a crisis pregnancy.
The use of these pills is well-known practice, with a few mainstream media outlets covering the story and an open letter in June 2015 by 200 activists admitting to breaking the law by providing or procuring an abortion through the use of these pills.
It had appeared that while the authorities were aware of this practice they were indeed turning a blind eye to it with a few exceptions, namely the scapegoating of a 19-year-old student and a mother who procured pills for her teenage daughter.
The State are scared of the pills because they make an absolute mockery and joke of our laws. How much longer can they sit around pontificating about when women will be ready when safe abortions with pills are happening so regularly?
While the majority in society think that abortion should be decriminalised, this is not reflected by the politicians at Stormont who have allowed this intolerable situation to happen by presiding over the draconian law.
As it stands, 67,000 women a year die from unsafe abortions throughout the world. If we lose the choice, albeit the illegal choice, of the pills here we could see women returning to unsafe methods. The state is creating fertile land for pregnancy related deaths.
Earlier today, Monday 20th March, pro-choice activists and supporters of Alliance for Choice held several noisy protests outside PSNI headquaters in both Derry and Belfast in a respond to this new wave of attacks against women's rights in the six counties.

Today in Derry, the Ireland Section of the Industrial Workers of the World held the first in what's to be a series of public talks on the history and current activity of the militant workers union. Organised by local members and supporters, the meeting was addressed by IWW Ireland regional organiser who began this afternoons event with a rendition of Joe Hill. The historical folk song tells the story of how a fellow Wobblie organiser was first imprisoned then executed of his workplace agitation in North America.
A spokesperson for today's event stated "Today's gathering in Derry was to give people a general insight into the ideas and politics behind the Industrial Workers of the World. The speaker covered the history of IWW as an international labor union that was founded in 1905 in Chicago, Illinois touching on critical periods for our class since then, the different prominent figures involved of which, many of whom would have been from these shores.
"Likewise todays event looked closely at the different guiding principles and achievements of the IWW to date, but more importantly the need for our class both within the workplace and at community level to take a stand against the corruption and arrogance of the bosses and capitalism alike. For us there is little difference as to what our class face here today, north and south and what it has had to face at the beginning of the last century when the IWW first emerged. The remedy for the challenges that we face today undoubtedly needs to be workplace and community self defence, agitation and organisation. The motto of Industrial Workers of the World is 'an injury to one - is an injury to all' that is why meetings like this today are taking place with branches forming across the country. Today's gathering was an important first step"
The Industrial Workers of the World are currently organising in Ireland and at present have members and supporters in towns and cities such Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Derry, Newry, Armagh, Monaghan, Galway amongst other areas. If you would like to get involved in your area then please use the following link. https://iww.org.uk/application_form/
Anarchists in Derry, once again joined with the relatives, friends and comrades of Tony Taylor, a local republican activist from the city who has been interned by the British State for one year.
During Saturday's demonstration activists from a number of other political organisations and none also helped mark the anniversary of Tony Taylors detention in support and solidarity with his partner Lorraine and family.
The occasion was also used to highlight the current situation across the six countries in which activists can be selected by the state and removed from their loved ones and community simply because they hold an opposing pokitical opinion to what they would like you to have.
No matter what the views of Tony Taylor are, as anarchists we will continue to support him and his family's ongoing fight for justice by demanding his immediate release as this fight, above all else is a human rights issue of which everyone should be concerned about.
We totally reject the disappearance and imprisonment of all political activists and will continue to do so by taking to the streets along with others equally concerned with human rights, just as we have done so countless times before for Tony as well as other activists in the past. It is vital that everyone and anyone interested in human rights must speak out against Tony Taylor's imprisonment and demand an end to this and other States practice and use of internment. Demand justice and freedom for Tony Taylor!
What follows is a statement issued by Lorrine Taylor yesterday on the anniversary of her partner's imprisonment:
"I can't believe its a year today my husband Tony Taylor was illegally taken away from us by the PSNI without any explanation while were out on a shopping trip with our children in our home town .we are told his arrest was based on unaccountable intelligence supposedly provided by the security services. And that is all we know .I believe this is an abuse of power and an infringement of Tony's human rights .And yet that has been enough to deprive a citizen of this citizen for a full calendar year .Shocking yet over the past year my family have been kept under constant surveillance by the police .They know I'm not a political activist but I will fight for my husband's human rights and I won't stop until I get justice for him .please help us fight for Justice my children need there daddy home .love and miss him loads xxxx"
